Uveitis Treatment

The uveitis treatment focuses on healing inflammation and preventing damage to the delicate internal structure of the eye that affects one quarter of the human population.

Reason for Uveitis Treatment

Caused by environmental issues, congenital factors, poor nutrition, or as a result of other illnesses, theses eye irregularities may not be problematic or they may cause total vision loss.  With proper medical resources, most can be cured or improved.

Uveitis, (one of the most common vision issues), is basically an inflammation within the eye. If left untreated, significant damage can ensue and may be irreparable. Uveitis targets the front side of the eye, (anterior), the rear, retina side, (posterior), or intermediate uveitis, (the vitreous and peripheral retina).

When the cause is known, uveitis treatment may entail anti-inflammatories, chemical therapy, or surgery. Typically anti-inflammatories are the first choice for dealing with the low grade infection that is causing the inflammation.

Uveitis-Treatment

If the initial cause of the inflammation is understood then other, more targeted methods may be more effective. There are a whole host of diseases that may have caused the chronic uveitis in the first place, from herpes simplex, to multiple sclerosis, to tuberculosis. There are other causes that we are all exposed to such as environmental toxins, industrial acids, or bacterial infection.

Types of Uveitis Treatment

Anterior uveitis treatment, (iritis and episcleritis treatment), usually involves using anti-inflammatory drugs in the form of eye-drops, (Corticosteroids). In strengths designed for the type and severity of the uveitis problem, these have proven to be very effective. The more complicated and serious posterior uveitis treatment is, of course, problematic because of the proximity to the retinal nerve.  Access to the inflamed tissue is from the inside the eye and socket.

For uveitis treatment corticosteroids are used in different forms and strengths depending on the type of uveitis and localization of the inflammation, (when possible). The medication is delivered by tablets, (such as prednisone), injections, or a new technology called Retisert by Bausch & Lomb.

Another uveitis treatment is Retisert, which is a drug implant, put in place by injection as part of a surgical procedure, and is good for about two and a half years. Keep in mind that posterior uveitis is usually chronic and is connected to the anti-immune system so symptoms often return after a time.
